Motivation Monday: Writing Smarter with SMART Goals

Finding the motivation to write can feel easy at the start of a new year. Everything is fresh, possibilities are endless, and we’re full of ambition. But how do you keep that momentum going weeks—or even months—later? For me, the answer lies in cultivating and building on motivation through clear, achievable goals.

A blonde woman writer who is frustrated

When I was working on my poetry manuscript (which I’ll be reviewing with editors later this month!), I found myself struggling to stay consistent. I loved the poems I was writing, but the scope of the project felt overwhelming. I had no clear sense of how to finish.

Then, I discovered the concept of SMART goals as it applies to writing, and it completely changed my approach. By breaking my larger goal—completing a full manuscript—into smaller, more manageable steps, I was able to stay focused and motivated.

For example, instead of saying, “I’ll finish my manuscript this year,” I set specific weekly goals like drafting two new poems or revising one section. Each time I hit a milestone, I felt a renewed sense of accomplishment that propelled me forward.

That experience inspired me to create a free Goal-Setting Workbook for Writers, designed to help you do the same.
